Labia correction

Labiaplasty is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedures for women worldwide. Such surgery is often performed not only for aesthetic purposes but also for functional reasons.

The labia are made up of two parts – the labia majora and the labia minora. The labia minora, or inner lips, are skin folds located on either side of the vaginal opening and can vary widely in shape and size.

Why is corrective surgery on the labia performed?

The most common procedure is labiaplasty, surgery to reduce the size of the labia minora. The most common reasons for this are:

  • functional impairment – the increased size of the labia causes discomfort and excess irritation of the labia;
  • aesthetic improvement – in the case of deformity or asymmetry of the labia;
  • psychosocial reasons – to improve your appearance, sex life, and self-esteem.

The most common functional problem associated with enlarged labia minora is discomfort and excessive irritation, which may be aggravated by wearing tight clothing, engaging in sports, or during sexual activity. Similarly, large labia can cause discomfort during urination. However, the size and shape of the labia can also cause emotional distress, reducing a woman’s self-confidence and overall quality of life when such are perceived as unsatisfactory.

What are the possible forms of correction, and how are they carried out?

The two most common labiaplasty techniques are trimming the outer edge of the labia or excising a wedge-shaped section of tissue.

Edge resection is the most commonly used method, with good results and a very low risk of complications.

Wedge resection is used less frequently. It reduces the size of the labia but allows the irregularity of the edges to be preserved. This technique has a higher risk of scar tissue formation and suture opening.

In our clinic, labiaplasty is performed in the operating theatre under short-term anaesthesia. After the surgery, the patient spends a few hours in the ward. You can go home on the same day after the procedure. However, if the patient feels worried, she can stay in the clinic until the next day.

What are the possible risks associated with such surgery?

Any surgical procedure has risks that need to be taken into account. Although complications from labiaplasty are rare, patients must be fully informed of the potential risks. Potential risks include bleeding, inflammation, inadequate or excessive reduction of the labia, delayed healing, nerve-related complications, clitoral injury, altered tissue sensitivity, pain during intercourse, and the possibility that the final aesthetic result may differ from the patient’s expectations.

Kādi ir  ierobežojumi pēc šādas operācijas?

It is important to keep the wounds clean and dry after the surgery to ensure good healing. Special ointments are rarely needed; washing and drying are usually sufficient. Wearing tight clothing during healing is not recommended.

Physical activity should be avoided for ~2 weeks after labiaplasty. Sexual activity can resume after 4–6 weeks. You can fully return to all your daily activities after about one month.
